The Image
The idea behind the EP artwork is to capture the identity of the album: the lyrical content, the title, and the concept.
To me the artwork is very important, it is integral to album, and it is part and parcel of the whole package. I want the image to provide the visual element that accompanies the music, very much in the style of 60’s and 70’s record sleeves. Many of the lyrical themes in the songs use nature as a ‘folky’ metaphor, therefore the artwork has to capture both the theme of the lyrics and this metaphor. The nature element is one of the key things that drew me to Lisa's work as well as the colours she uses, which are so vivid and vibrant. This is perfectly portrayed in the EP cover artwork, with the richness of the blues in the sky and river, and the brightness of the yellows in the fields.
When I first met Lisa, I only had a very basic idea of what I wanted; I knew I wanted a river, a person and some fields. The ideas that Lisa sketched out and the painting itself, went through a number of iterations, including a tree that reached out over the person and path. This tree idea was based on some photographs of me walking along a path running through a tunnel of trees.
All-in-all, the final artwork is an amazing piece of work, considering its simple beginnings, and far exceeds anything I had imagined.
Thanks to Lisa! I would highly recommend checking out her other work - www.lisabartlett.co.uk
